The book Metro 2033 was published in 2005, but became a bestseller only after its re-release in 2010. A few years later, the second book in the series was published, after which Dmitry Glukhovsky created the “metro 2033 universe”. As planned, various authors wrote their books in it, telling about various cities and people of the post-nuclear world. 7 books were written about St. Petersburg by three authors: Shimun Vrochek, Andrey Dyakonov and Dmitry Ermakov. I decided to collect everything that became known about the St. Petersburg metro from the universe.

The St. Petersburg metro was built in 1955 and became one of the deepest in the world. After the nuclear war that happened on July 6, 2013, it became a refuge for more than 50.000 people.

After the pressure gates closed, panic began in the metro. Hunger and stress caused a wave of suicides. However, to prevent human extinction, Saddam the Great took power in the metro. Before the war, he served in the riot police, but he always wanted to become something more, which he later did. Due to the fact that Saddam became, in fact, a dictator and ruled the community of metro residents in a less than gentle way, after his death he was nicknamed “Bloody”. However, it was thanks to him that the metro did not die out and received a second chance.

Empire Vegan

Now it’s time to talk about the many organizations formed after the death of Saddam the Bloody. The first state to appear was the Vegan Empire. Vegan was finally formed in 2024 after the capture of the Alexander Nevsky Square station. The state occupied almost the entire Nevsko-Vasileostrovskaya line, and in 2033 the empire began expansion into the rest of the metro.

The Vegan Empire has a monarchical system. At the top of the stairs stands the emperor, one step below is the aristocracy – genetically modified people close to the emperor. Below are ordinary residents, and on the last step are slaves. Slavery blooms and smells in Vegan, and in the literal sense. Slaves are used not only as labor, plants are grown on them, and beds are made from their bodies. Slaves are often used for inhumane experiments to implant plants into them. For example, they are used for surface work, making them immune to radiation, but such people lose the opportunity to live in the subway because they become dependent on radiation.

The Vegan army is equipped with the best weapons and technology in the metro. She, like the Monolith from Stalker, has the best technology, but no one knows where it comes from.

Primorsky Alliance

The Maritime Alliance appeared in 2027 and was the initiative of General Memov, who wanted to repeat the success of his mentor Saddam the Great. As you can guess from the name, the history of the Alliance began with the Primorskaya station, which supported the idea of ​​the general. Then Admiralteyskaya, then Gostiny Dvor, and finally Vasileostrovskaya joined the Alliance. Vosstaniya Square, Moskovskaya and Borders refused to adjoin. Until 2032, the second Primorskaya was part of the Alliance, but due to the breakthrough of mutants from the Gulf of Finland, it had to be left.

The Alliance has a caste-feudal system. All residents, starting from adulthood, inherit the profession of their parent: farmer, digger or security guard. The head until his death in 2033 was Memov. Each Alliance station was required to contribute something to the general fund. For example, Vasileostrovskaya supplied pork and other meat.

The Seaside Alliance has a large amount of manpower, surpassing its main enemy – the Vegan Empire, but inferior to them in pre-war technology. The Primorsky Army has the best digging teams in the metro, large pre-war warehouses with weapons and food.

Curb guards

Curb workers are residents of Moscow and cities from the south-east of Russia who ended up in St. Petersburg when the serenades howled. When the nuclear alarm sounded, the visitors were driven underground by Tatar police major Akhmetzyanov, who later proclaimed himself King Akhmet. Trade City is a community occupying the Sennaya – Sadovaya junction. It is inhabited by merchants and their families. The city, like many things in the metro, appeared after the death of Saddam and is a capitalist organization.

As the name suggests, it is the largest shopping center in St. Petersburg.At the stations of the hub there are a large number of public establishments – hotels, restaurants, brothels and casinos. The city trades with all inhabited metropolitan areas, including Vegan.

A few years later, the head of the station Director had an idea about a goal for the people. He came up with a mission for them. According to him, he wanted the residents to have at least something more than the desire to survive. This “goal” meant digging a tunnel leading to the capital. Those who disagreed with the idea were called “difficult to educate” and sent to excavations.

The communists waged an ideological struggle with the Trade City and refused to cooperate with the Primorye residents.

So, I talked about the main states after nuclear St. Petersburg, and now it’s time to talk about the small organizations that make up the main backbone of the metro. Without some of them, even large states could not exist.

Mortus

Mortuses are metro gravediggers. They settled on International and Bucharest in 2015. In the transition between stations they built a crematorium. The beginning of their work was timed to coincide with the death of Saddam the Great in 2015, when the population decreased several times due to unrest. They collect corpses throughout the metro and transport them to crematoriums on railcars. Mortus are allowed to enter all residential metro stations, except Vegan, who, as I said, found a use for corpses. Causing harm to Mortus is punishable by public execution. During the war, Vegan attacked undefended gravedigger stations, and although the Mortus held out for several days, the empire captured the crematorium and then the entire line.

Military doctors

The doctors who settled on Lenin Square are teachers and students of the Naval Academy, who managed to go down to the metro. Subsequently, they sent stalkers to the warehouses of the institute for medicines and equipment.

In 2033, Vegan attacked Lenin Square. Only thanks to timely assistance from the Primorsky Alliance, the station was able to be defended at the cost of considerable sacrifices.

Elektrosila

Residents of Elektrosila are engaged in the production of weapons and ammunition. Factory workers who took refuge in a bunker decided to continue working despite the end of the world. This allowed them to launch industrial production of cartridges within a few years and trade with other stations. Some time later, Elektrosila began producing generators and other electrical appliances.

Sailors

Sailors from a floating drilling station that belonged to Moshchny Island. Powerful sent her and her crew to search for survivors throughout Europe. Thus, about several million people settled on the island. In 2033, the island was struck by a nuclear attack. The sailors, who saw their home dying from the sea, vowed revenge. They decided that the strike was carried out from St. Petersburg.

Arriving in St. Petersburg, they settled on Chkalovskaya and gave the rest of the metro an ultimatum: if the criminals were not handed over to them, the sailors threatened to release gas at the station. In the end, the terrorist was found, but the sailors remained in the metro and became full-fledged residents of it.

There are also many gangs.

Flyers

Bandits stationed on Narvskaya. They got their name because of the leader, nicknamed Pilot. A few years later, the Flyers began a war with a neighboring station, where the Kirov Brigade took root. As a result of this struggle, the residents of Narvskaya lost, and their Pilot fled and ended up on Zvezdnaya, where he was sent to hard labor. Later he was able to come to an agreement with the Director, return to Narvskaya and regain power. After the death of the leader, the Flyers disbanded, and nothing is known about their further fate.

Kirov Brigade

The overwhelming majority of the brigade that occupied the Kirovsky Zavod station consisted of thieves, prisoners and extremely antisocial elements. Power was in the hands of an authority figure who before the war was considered a famous thief in law. The boss of the Kirov brigade is allowed to participate in the political life of the Big Metro, but few people listen to his opinion. After the collapse of Letunov, the brigade captured Narvskaya without a fight and began selling drugs.

Now it’s time to talk about cults and small associations.

Cult of the Blind

This is a small cult of about a hundred people, settled on Prospekt Prosveshcheniya. Blind people move around the subway with a guide at their head, who is also blind, but better oriented in space. Occultists hate sighted people and periodically sacrifice them to a certain Beast, blinding them and then killing them. The blind have entered into a contract with the Gorkovskaya station, which allows them to steal strangers and slaves.

Angels

In 2015, Saddam the Bloody became concerned about the problem of overpopulation. Having collected all the boys from Elizarovskaya station, he ordered them to be taken to a dead-end tunnel and castrated. Several children died due to carelessness.

Residents of Ozerki treat residents of other stations peacefully, despite rumors circulating in post-nuclear St. Petersburg. During the war with Vegan, some people went behind enemy lines and, if possible, attacked him from there.
